UCD Choral Scholars and Ireland's Remarkable Voices

The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin are known in Ireland, have become a huge hit on the internet and are amazing to hear in person. While every one of the members has an obvious love of music and harmonies, most of them are scholars in areas of study, other than music.

“Most of the members are chemical engineers, in computer science, economics, politics and philosophy. We only have maybe three actual music majors in the mix,” says visiting artistic director Mark Chambers.
This is a chance for anyone with a good enough voice to show off. They have to hit the mark, professional musical training or not.
You see, music is just a thing in so many Irish families that many great singers keep the music as a hobby and pursue other things. This program is a bit like a showcase for them.
And you might be surprised at the incredible commitment every singer in the group had. The focus for all, was on the sound of the overall group.
Every voice counts
Desmond Earley is the mastermind who built the sound of the Choral Scholars over the past 23 years. He has stuck to his dream and it has become a reality. This group, shows that fine voices can come from anywhere and it’s ‘the blend’ of the talent that makes the magic. He was away the day I visited the campus and heard the group.
Scholars come from all programs, they just need to be able to sing to get in.
The harmonies in a rehearsal were enough to give you chills. So tight, so beautiful, so strong. I realised that they were all individual voices, from all walks of life, with individual goals. But during that two hour rehearsal they came together as one beautifully harmony. It was magical!
